Our role in KiwiSaver

Inland Revenue’s role is one of a central administrator. We provide information on the goals and benefits of KiwiSaver to help people decide whether it is right for them. It keeps track of overall membership of the scheme and ensures KiwiSaver deductions from employers are passed onto the members scheme provider.

We are also oversee the following functions:

  • opt outs
  • savings suspensions
  • transferring any Government contributions to a members of KiwiSaver scheme.  

Inland Revenue does not provide financial advice or help people choose which KiwiSaver scheme to belong to. Members should look to the Commission for Financial Capability, and the Sorted.org.nz website in particular for information to assist them with these important decisions.

Once a person becomes a member of a KiwiSaver scheme, members' primary relationship is with their scheme provider.
