At the end of the tax year, we work out if you:
- are owed a tax refund
- have tax to pay
- have paid exactly the right amount of tax.
We send you these details in an 'income tax assessment'.
If you paid too much tax during the year, you get a tax refund. In the past you had to ask us if you had a refund. Now, we work it out automatically and pay any refund directly into your bank account. It’s a simpler and more cost-effective way to do it.
You might see the refund in your bank account before your income tax assessment arrives. Or you might get your income tax assessment before you get your tax refund.
What you need to do
If you do not have your income tax assessment yet, check that we have your correct contact details. You can do this in myIR or call us.
If you do not have your refund yet
Check that we have your correct bank account details. We’re no longer doing refunds by cheque, except in exceptional circumstances. You can check your details in myIR or call us.
We’re doing the refunds in stages, so not everyone will get theirs at the same time. We're aiming to get them all paid between late May and the end of July. If you haven't got yours by then, let us know.
What happens next
When your income tax assessment arrives, check it's correct. If not, you can correct it in myIR or call us.
